New Zealand Mobile Market Back in Business!

Calling all Kiwis!

After a period of sluggish sales, New Zealand's mobile phone market is finally ringing up a comeback, with a strong 10% growth over the past year! The good news keeps ringing - the final quarter saw an even steeper climb of 14%.

This resurgence might surprise some considering the "overall gloominess in discretionary spending by consumers" [Scoop News]

But analysts are pointing to a fascinating trend:  upmarket phones are leading the charge.

According to market research firm IDC, premium handsets costing over NZ$1650 (US$1000) are driving the market growth. Apple's iPhone 15 Pro series seems to be a major reason behind this, experiencing a significant increase in sales compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro. This strong performance has narrowed the gap between Apple and Samsung, the current market leader.

While Samsung maintains its top spot with a 44% share of units sold, Apple follows closely behind at 36%.  However, due to Apple's focus on higher-priced devices, they're likely to hold a larger slice of the revenue pie.

Together, these two tech titans control a whopping 80% of the New Zealand mobile phone market. The remaining 20% is primarily filled by One NZ's own-brand devices and budget-friendly options.  Interestingly, Samsung's dominance extends to the mid-range market as well, with their Galaxy A series capturing a commanding 42% share.

What does this mean for you?

If you're a New Zealand mobile phone shopper, this trend suggests a few things:

  • Be prepared to see more high-end devices on store shelves.
  • Do your research! With premium phones leading the pack, comparing specs and features becomes even more crucial.
  • Don't discount mid-range options. Samsung's A series continues to be a strong contender in the affordability segment.
